In such high-contrast images, the tradeoff is often the right decision. You choose an exposure that “protects” shadows or highlights, whichever is more important.

However, in some situations it is possible to use smart post-processing techniques to take pictures that exceed the standard camera capabilities: we use HDR.

Poor, misunderstood, slanderous HDR

If you compensate and try to achieve a high dynamic range, you can often get unnatural, oversaturated pictures at the output. Unfortunately, this is where the negative reputation of HDR comes from. Usually the abuse of this method is manifested when shooting architecture and partly in industrial tourism; in these areas he became a bit of a joke and a subject of many ridicule.

Tone mapping

I heard somewhere that tone mapping and HDR are interchangeable, but it's not the same thing. Tone mapping is a technique used for HDR photography.

Tone compression enhances contrast, but at the same time (theoretically) retains detail and color. This can be done in two ways, globally, when each pixel is matched the same way, or locally, when the algorithm is configured for each pixel depending on the surrounding tones and the image itself.

With light to moderate use, you can improve the picture. If it is used incorrectly, you will intensify problems such as noise and dust spots on the sensor, create contrast rings and unnecessary shine. A delicate balance is required here.

What do you need

HDR effect can be achieved using any equipment, as its essence lies in the subsequent processing. Ideally, you should have a camera that allows you to shoot in RAW format to get the most out of your shots.

Exposure Bracketing

AEB  - Another useful feature. This abbreviation stands for auto exposure bracketing  (Automatic Exposure Bracketing) and adjusts the camera so that you can take a picture with several stops of exposure. For example, you can set the parameters EV: -2, 0, +2. With these settings, pictures will be taken two stops lighter and two darker.

The idea is that you get the best possible chance to get the first shot with the correct shadows, the second with excellent halftones and the other with the right bright areas. If you combine them, in theory you should get a perfectly exposed photograph with a wide dynamic range.

This can be achieved without function. AEB, but then you will need to manually adjust the settings. It also increases the risk that the camera will move during shooting or something in the frame will change.

Tripod

This is also not a mandatory, but very useful thing. A tripod will allow you to hold the camera still while it takes pictures with different exposures. Even hard-handed photographers have a pretty hard time holding the camera for exactly a few shots.

HDR post-processing software

Prices for software that can properly mix HDR shots vary greatly. The popular Photomatix program is sold in two versions, its cost starts from $ 39. If you already have Photoshop or Lightroom, you can use both of these programs to work. If you do not have any of the above and prefer free options, there is open source software called. This program has several blending modes and will be a great starting point. You can also use the very popular (and recently become free) Nik Collection  , which includes the ability to mix different exposure or tone settings from a single exposure photo. However, this is not real HDR and the same amount of detail can be obtained when making corrections in RAW format.

This is a very good result for a one-click action. The difference is barely noticeable, but a poor result is ideal when it comes to HDR. You can consider that you have successfully applied HDR if the result looks normal, harmonious and natural.

If you don’t have much time or you just want to adjust the picture, the action is ideal: it can be quickly launched, it makes light corrections and does not go beyond. This is exactly what you need - the action allows you to freely make your edits.

Technics

Exposure setting

You will need at least two shots, but it is better that there are three: the first with normal exposure, the second for shadows, and the third for highlights. Setting the bracketing mode ( AEB) cameras and use high-speedburst mode allows you to easily get the shots you need.

Do not forget that you cannot change settings between shots. Ideally, this means that you should shoot manually so that the camera does not change the ISO or aperture settings.

Avoid moving objects, which after gluing photos can become phantoms. Even tree branches swaying in the wind will cause problems, so pay attention to the subject and what is happening around.

If you are going to take the same pictures one after another, it will be useful to separate them with a photograph of something else, so that you can easily determine which images need to be grouped. I usually photograph my hand, so I can easily notice the separation even among the thumbnails.

Do not overdo it with exposure

When working with AEB, do not make a big difference unless you take a lot of pictures. For most situations, just three shots are enough to get an excellent HDR effect. Avoid extreme combinations, for example, [-5, 0, 5]; instead, choose a difference of one, two or three stops. If you take more pictures, you can take larger values.

Again, again, bracketing with one or two stops is usually sufficient, especially for the RAW format. When photographing people, it may be worth taking pictures with a difference of one. For high-contrast photographs, such as skyscrapers or landscapes, you can increase the difference to two or three.

Mix photo

As I said earlier, every program that can handle HDR photos has different functions and options, but the general approach is always the same.

The software will ask you to manually enter the exposure values \u200b\u200bfor each picture if you can not automatically recognize it. Also, such software usually has functions Chromatic aberration corrections  (Correct Chromatic Abberation), Noise reduction  (Reduce Noise) and Phantom Reduction  (Reduce Ghosting). All this can be very useful for solving common problems when working with HDR, so do not hesitate to play around with the sliders to evaluate the positive effect.

After you have configured the settings to your liking, the program will mix the images into a single 32-bit image, which most likely will look awful. This is normal, do not worry. Next up is the tone mapping. At this stage, you will make corrections to adjust your photo - choose whether to strengthen the details, where to reduce or increase the saturation and adjust the compression.

Since you need at least three shots to get an HDR image, it would be wise to avoid movement. If something moves, even tree branches in the wind, it is obvious that in the photographs this object will turn out differently and in the end will look blurry or strange.

Saturation Too High

If the scene is full of high contrast colors, using HDR will enhance this, often to the detriment of the photo. It may be necessary to bleach the image after processing to remove excess saturation. Also with areas of low contrast or color - as a result, you can get a flat, blurred look.

Computer speed

If you process many large RAW files, the computer may begin to slow down. Make sure that scheduled updates do not interfere with processing and there is enough free RAM to work. Modern computers do a great job of editing large volumes of photos, but there is still a risk that the program may freeze if requests are too serious.

At the dawn of the creation of television and video equipment, there was one of the standards for the dynamic range of brightness and color, it was due to one of the standards of television in those days. NU couldn’t transmit the greater “color radiation” of the lamp TVs, just as the standard video cameras and VCRs could not record it - to put it very bluntly, “the technology was lame”, therefore the whole wide range of brightness and color was compressed to very standard colors transmitted our old televisions and television towers.

In simple terms, we can say that from a wide palette of colors and brightness, we perceived only about 20 - 30% (and possibly even lower)! Therefore, the first films were not as realistic as they are now.

This function was simply called - SDR Standard Dynamic Range - that is, the standard display mode for brightness and color. This is a kind of carburetor in the age of injection technology.


But now a new and essentially revolutionary mode has appeared - HDR, as I wrote above, this function greatly increases the brightness and color transmission of our televisions, and also improves the recording of our video gadgets (DVRs, telephones) or cameras.

How does it work?

The process is quite simple, the camera takes several shots with a different color range, as well as with different brightness. It is clear that in the latter version, the detail of the picture is simply “wow”, but if it is obtained at night or on slushy weather, high resolution will lose its position of influence on the final result. In the case of direct sunlight or headlights, a so-called polarization filter (CPL) will help out. But there is one big “BUT”: the price of more equipped DVRs can bite a lot.

The creators of car devices understood how to increase the Dynamic Range, almost without raising its value - software and hardware, using HDR matrices. There are two types of high dynamic range:

  1. Consistent  (from the English word “sequential”) - creates several separate frames with different shutter speeds, saving details in the brightest / darkest places. Suitable for recording on the video smooth movement and in the absence of moving objects, as they are smeared with a combination of the resulting images.   2. Chess  (staggered from English) - a common frame is formed from alternating dots (pixels) of two different exposure pictures. Just this type of HDR function is used in DVRs, it doesn’t “eat” a lot of memory and does not distort objects in motion. The minimum required frame rate is 60 fps, so HDR may not be supported by some resolutions.

So what is still more useful - WDR or HDR?

The beauty of HDR is that it increases the Dynamic Range by as much as 15, or even 18 dB! Wide dynamic range or, in short, WDR (translated as extended dynamic range) - the solution, unfortunately, is more expensive. The reason is in the matrix, its Dynamic Range exceeds 100 dB. However, thanks to him, the recorder can record what is happening in the most difficult lighting conditions without losing contrast, detail, all the same brightness.

WDR, in fact, automatically adjusts these characteristics, adjusting the exposure where it is required, i.e. darkened areas of the frame brightens and vice versa; too light - darkens. Keeping this balance ensures a high-quality video when leaving the tunnel, or entering it, when the lens is “blinded” by direct sunlight. So, now it’s clear that the purpose of these two modes is identical, just the implementation method is different.
